2024 Shoreline Club Policy FAQ

How is playing time calculated on match day?

Volleyball substitutions and lineups are not like hockey or basketball where they are measured by clock minutes.  The amount of rotations a players stays in the game is governed by several factors, some of which are outside of anyone's control.

Volleyball lineups can be thought of as 3 front row rotations and 3 back row rotatations for any one of the 6 players on the court at any given time.  Each player will spend 3 rotations in the front row and 3 rotations in the back row in between their turn to serve.  Players are commonly scheduled to play either the back row 3 rotations or the front row 3 rotations.  This is because there are certain skills and attributes that naturally lend themselves to playing either the front row or back row.  Players may be scheduled to play both the front row and the back row.

Here is an example of how factors outside of anyone's control can affect playing time.  Let's say Susie was scheduled to play the front row three rotations of a position.  Let's say she started in the front row left position - meaning she was scheduled to be the 4th server for the team in the lineup.

Our team serves and the other team wins the point.  The opposition rotates and serves.  Our team wins the point - our team rotates and serves.  (Susie is now still in the front row but now she is the middle front - she will now be the third player to serve.)  The opposition wins the point, they rotate and serve.  Our team wins the point and we rotate to serve.  (Susie now rotates to the front right and she will be the next server after her teammate serving now.)  The opponent wins the point and they rotate and serve.  Our team wins the point and rotate.  Susie now rotates to the server position in the back row and Jenny substitutes into the game as she was scheduled to play the back row three rotations while Susie plays the front row three rotations.  Susie has rotated through the front row while playing 6 total rallies.

Let's now imagine Susie starts the game in the front left again.  Our team serves and

wins 3 points consecutively. The other team then wins 3 points consecutively.  Now our

team wins 3 points consecutively.  Our team wins a point and we rotate (Susie to the middle front).  The other team wins 3 points in a row and then our team wins three points in a row (Susie has rotated to the right front.)  Now the opponent wins three points in a row before we win a point.  Susie now rotates to the serving position and is scheduled to come out of the game for Jenny  who was scheduled to play the back row three rotations.  In this instance - Susie was scheduled for the exact same amount of playing time (the front row 3 rotations) but because each team won 3 consecutive points before rotating - Susie spent 16 total rallies on the court.   This is just due to the randomness of the amount of points each team served before rotating.  Susie was scheduled to play three rotations but her actual playing time was vastly different.

How much playing time should a player expect on match day?

Playing time is not dispersed equally.  Every player should expect to play a minimum of 3 rotations through the front row or 3 rotations through the back row for at least one game during each match.  This means not every player will appear in every game of each match.

Players will earn more playing time on match day through competition during practices with the other players in their position group.

Coaches are aware that all players would like to play the maximum amount.  Players are aware that no matter what decisions the coaches make - it is a mathematical impossibility for every player on the team to play the maximum.  That is not a fair expectation.

Every player should have the expectation to play at least the stated minimum amount and then earn additional time through their results in practices.

I see my daughter's playing time on match day as the prime measurement of how much value she is receiving from the club volleyball season.  Is this right?

Acknowledging this perspective as a way to measure - there is much more to consider:

Each team (except 12's) in an average 4 week period is scheduled to train for 24 hours (12 team practices averaging 2 hours each.)

Each team in an average 4 week period is scheduled for 2 additional hours of strength training.

Each team in an average 4 week period is scheduled for 5 hours of competiton.

What is the correct way to begin conflict resolution?

In order, players should always begin conflict resolution in this order:

1) Player speak with team coach about the issue.  Tip: ask your coach to speak either before or after a team practice.  Coaches should always be receptive to listening to a player.

2) If this does not resolve the issue, players should speak to their team coach with Karl present.  In this scenario, Karl will guide the player on how to best communicate their position to the coach.  Karl will also attempt to provide understanding to the player of the coach's and team's position.

3) If this does not resolve the issue, then the players parents may contact the team coach or Karl to join the conversation.

This is always the best practice to have dialogue about things that are happening.  Remember - there are a lot of opinion based views in sports.  Opinions can and will be different from the perspective of the coach, player and parents.

There is an issue pursuant to playing time or a competition we would like to address.

After every competition, players and coaches should wait 24 hours to begin dialogue.  This allows for cooler heads to prevail.

What do my season fees include and what do they not include?

Season fees include everything related to volleyball on the court.  Items like player equipment packages, practice facilites, coaching, tournament entry fees and registration with JVA are all things that are included.

Season fees do not include any travel expenses such as lodging for the players or families at travel tournaments.

If you have questions about if something is included in season fees or not - please contact Karl.

I have a question that is not answered here.

Please contact your team coach or Karl.  We would be happy to answer any question to the best of our ability.
